The Best Time of Year to Get a Keratin Treatment in Massachusetts
Massachusetts weather is unpredictable. Your hair doesn't have to be.
If you live in Massachusetts, you already know that our weather is not kind to hair. Humid summers, harsh winters, and the unpredictable shoulder seasons in between create a year-round battle against frizz, static, and unmanageable hair. The good news is that a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment addresses almost every weather-related hair problem — and knowing when to book it can make a real difference in how long your results last and how much you get out of the service.
Here's a season-by-season breakdown of when to book, when to wait, and why timing matters.
Spring: the best time to book
Late March through May is the single best window to book a keratin treatment in Massachusetts. Here's why: you're coming out of a dry winter where your hair has likely taken a beating from indoor heating systems, wool hats, and cold dry air. Your hair is at its most depleted right now — which means it's primed to absorb and hold the keratin treatment effectively.
More importantly, booking in spring means your treatment is fully set and working at peak performance right as the humidity starts to climb. By the time June and July arrive with their signature South Shore humidity, your hair is protected. Frizz that would normally take over in summer simply can't get through the smoothed, sealed cuticle of a freshly treated head of hair.
Spring bookings also tend to last the longest, because you're going into the treatment with consistent moisture levels rather than the extremes of summer or winter. For Massachusetts clients, late April or early May is the sweet spot.
Summer: still worth it, book early in the season
If you missed the spring window, booking in early summer — June, before the peak heat arrives — is your next best option. The treatment will protect your hair through the most humid months of the year and make beach days, outdoor events, and the general humidity of a Massachusetts summer dramatically more manageable.
One thing to keep in mind: if your hair has been heavily exposed to saltwater or chlorine, you'll want to do a clarifying treatment before your keratin appointment. Salt and chlorine build up on the hair and can prevent the keratin from bonding properly. Let us know before you book if you've been swimming regularly.
Avoid booking a keratin treatment right after a day at the beach or a week at the Cape without washing your hair thoroughly first. Preparation makes a big difference in how well the treatment takes.
Fall: smart timing for the holidays
September and October are another excellent window. You're coming off summer, your hair may have taken some damage from sun and salt, and a keratin treatment in early fall means you'll have smooth, healthy hair all the way through the holiday season. Many of our clients book their fall keratin treatment specifically so they look great for Thanksgiving, holiday parties, and family photos without having to think about their hair.
Fall in Massachusetts also brings the kind of weather that makes hair difficult — cold, damp, windy — and a keratin treatment handles all of it. If you're planning a holiday hair service, book your keratin in September or October rather than waiting until December, when appointment slots fill up and you may not get the results in time for your events.
Winter: the trickiest season
Winter is the least ideal time for a keratin treatment, but it's still absolutely worth doing if frizz and dry hair are affecting your daily life. The challenge in winter is the extreme dryness — indoor heating systems strip moisture from the air, which can cause the keratin to fade a little faster than it would in other seasons.
To get the most out of a winter keratin treatment, use a deeply hydrating sulfate-free shampoo, sleep on a silk pillowcase, and consider a K18 molecular repair treatment as an add-on. K18 works at a different level than keratin — it repairs the internal bonds of the hair — and the two together give significantly longer-lasting results than either one alone.
Winter is also when static becomes a major issue for Massachusetts clients. A keratin treatment won't eliminate static entirely, but it smooths the cuticle enough to reduce it significantly.
The one rule that applies year-round
No matter when you book, do not wash your hair for 48 to 72 hours after your treatment. This is the single most important aftercare step. The keratin needs time to fully set into the hair cuticle, and washing too soon is the number one reason treatments don't last as long as they should. We give every client detailed aftercare instructions at their appointment.
